Introduction
Like in a Blue Moon, the ephemeral phenomenon where one observes two full moons in a month, the Blue Moon Villas are two houses that are designed with a close relationship with each other while still having a unique spatial and aesthetic identity.
Carved out of the terraced plantations of Coonoor in the Nilgiri mountains of southern India, the two Blue Moon Villas are designed to be a sculptural form rising out of the hill.
Concept
The architecture of the Blue Moon Houses reflects the poetic concept and narrative aspect of the design, emphasizing the curves and flow of the architecture, the lunar textures and the way the houses sit within the hilly terrain of the Nilgiri mountains.

Architecture And Landscape

With panoramic views of the lush tea plantations of the South, the program has been developed such so as to maximize views and allow the natural settings to permeate into the interiors.

The interior spaces have been designed as dynamic forms and shapes.

This is also reflective in the bold landscape carved out in the site.

The house is visualized to nest itself like a pavilion into the landscape.

With expressive, bold spaces it has an architecture that is simple yet profound.

It anchors itself to the ground all while reflecting the lightness of the sky.

Materiality And Interiors
Defined by stone walls built out of local granite, these individual retreat houses frame the tea plantation views through their dynamic roofs, central courtyards and wide curved glazing that draw the plantation terraces into their interiors.

The house is programmed such that it has spaces to reflect/ to meditate/ to write.

It has spaces which breathe in the surroundings and help in creating a pause from the usual hustle and bustle of life.

The heavy, granite stone juxtaposes with the lightness of the glass and the surrounding landscape.

The neutral material palette adds a character of warmth and comfort to the rustic interiors.
