The construction of the College Road House extension and refurbishment is almost completed. One of the last elements that is currently getting installed is the uniquely fabricated staircase which is a mix of steel structure, hand joinery with a distinctively digitally fabricated balustrade design. The design of the stairs is inspired from flying birds that allow a view towards the garden while giving an ephemeral lightweight quality to the space. The balustrade pattern is generated to have solid elements at the bottom with higher porosity at the top in order to achieve a lighter and stronger structural design. The fabrication and engineering of the open riser stair treads is also a unique collaboration with the mid-landing tread achieved as structurally light as possible to match the same proportion to the rest of the treads.
