Introduction
Our new proposal for a rear extension and refurbishment of a late 1900’s house in Surrey works with the rooflines of the existing Arts and Crafts house.
The timber volumes have a deep reveal that will provide shade inside from the summer sun while also proving a variety of shaded patio spaces.

Concept
The central concept has been to introduce a new set of pitched timber and glazed volumes that create an interesting geometrical play of roofs between the old and the new.
Each of the new volume is designed with a unique pitch and sky lights depending on the internal spaces thus creating a distinct character and mood within the interiors.
Old and New Roof Lines
The design proposal for the new extension creates a large open plan living space with a timber cladding and a green roof to blend with the large rear garden.
The new extension is designed as two storey infill extension towards the eastern side and a single storey extension in the middle.
Since the new extension faced the south sun, we designed it with larger overhangs that would protect the inside spaces during summer months while allowing the light to penetrate during the winter months.
The overhang also gave opportunity to create outdoor built-in seating as well as sun, while the green roofing provides additional insulation while being aesthetically.
Interiors and Space Design
FURNITURE
Window reveals can become seating merging the outside landscape with the interiors
SHADED PATIO
New patios within rear extension give variety of open and semi shaded spaces for outdoor life
SKYLIGHTS
Smaller cutouts give views to sky and create moods and play of light within new spaces
Inside/Outside & Sun Shade Strategies
The entrance space of the Orchard Gate House is a double height insert that creates a strong visual connection to the rear garden while bringing natural light and open plan to the existing deep plan house with dark interiors and no garden views.
Reflecting the style of the existing Arts and Crafts house and it’s dark metal details the entrance bay focuses on seamless concrete floors with an open riser metal and wood stairs with a large library that will act as open divider between the stairs and the living spaces along with showcasing the extra large book collection of the owners and bringing warmth to the space.
The proposed interiors with its seamless concrete floors , double height library , white arched walls and mid-century furniture pieces create a fresh , warm and stylish mood to the interiors.
Taking cue from the Arts and Crafts metal details , the pitched rooflines of the rear are reflected within the large glazed opening with slim dark metal trims that bring the outside green to the the Interiors while adding an interesting and warm contrast to the space.
The double sided black edged fireplace of the Orchard Gate House is the designed as the central highlight and divider between the open plan and minimal living and dining spaces.
