Introduction
The installation showcases India’s evolution within the contemporary art and culture for the Olympics 2012.
Inspired from the lotus, the Indian National Flower, the proposal works at a multi-concept level combining materiality and lotus motifs that have been traditionally used within Indian art, textiles and architecture with contemporary methods of digital design and fabrication.
Concept
Designed as a three dimensional weave, the Lotus Carpet knits a tapestry of of over 200 individually crafted brass lotuses that are mounted on a milled plywood carpet with an inlay pattern inspired from traditional Indian carpets.
The lotus bulbs will be raised with brass rods from the surface of the carpet to create a multi-dimension layered feel. Few of the lotus bulbs will have LED lights with player names etched one of the petals, corresponding to the total number of players participating at the London Olympics.
