Assemble Workshop

Introduction

Located between Mumbai and Pune, in the industrial zone of Khopoli, this new furniture factory and fabrication workshop is envisioned to be a mix between a digital laboratory and traditional joinery tools.

To shape the brief we wanted to break away, from what is assumed as a typical workshop space; closed, dirty, overcrowded and generally built in cheap and monotonous construction methods.

Instead the focus was to be on making, lightness and space that felt collaborative and creative that would lead to higher quality of work and working life for all the factory workers.

Concept

The proposal for this visionary furniture factory is inspired from the growth of trees to create an efficient branched steel structure with large column free spaces, an elegant column profile as well as a networked truss system that holds the roof.

Concept Diagram

The design aims to create large and expansive workshop space that offer an engaging and open work environment between a mix of disciplines, from industrial designers to façade engineers, to technicians and joiners.

The design aims to bring together technology, nature and industry as one, and to rethink and revalue their industrial spaces in a progressive, flexible and fresh ways.

Column Logic Studies

Workshop Strategies

Growth and Evolution

Design Development

The geometrics of the Assemble Workshop is derived from the branching systems wherein their interdependency of the primary and secondary beams and columns creates a lightweight and aesthetically striking structural canopy that is both innovative and experiential.

The main experience from the project is that it’s important to look at industrial program with a more open approach as we move towards new ways of working.
